Paul Bowles
Musician, Writer, Artist

Born in 1910, Paul Bowles led a wild and extraordinary life, of which adapting and translating 'No Exit' for English-speaking stages was a very brief pitstop.

Paul was famously tutored by Gertrude Stein.

He wrote surrealist poetry, fiction and music over nearly five decades from his home in Moracco.

His work, especially his novels such as 'Up Above the World' or 'The Sheltering Sky', drip with post-war anxiety and existential dread.

His love and respect for human culture lead him to record endangered Moroccan folk music for the Library of Congress, hoping to secure its accessibility for generations to come.

And something a little saucy. Bowles was a known bisexual in an unconventional marriage with Lesbian Jane Bowles. Although not bound by physical attraction they were repudiated to be absolutely devoted to each other spiritually, emotionally, and artistically.
